St. Luke’s McCall - Healing Garden

Commissioned by the St. Luke’s McCall Hospital Foundation and completed in the summer of ‘25, the Healing Garden was envisioned as a sanctuary of calm—a restorative space for patients, families, and hospital staff. Nestled within a compact site framed by buildings and roadways, the garden’s design works intentionally to transform a constrained area into a welcoming refuge for reflection, small gatherings, and events.

Privacy and intimacy are established through a series of plasma-cut steel mountain screens, precisely fabricated and vertically aligned. Their beveled edges create a dynamic interplay of opacity and transparency, revealing or concealing views depending on one’s vantage point. The silhouettes of these screens echo the mountain ranges beyond, grounding the space in the natural beauty of Idaho’s landscape.

To complement this theme, an elegant water feature serves as the garden’s focal point—two cylindrical steel vessels stacked in a sculptural arrangement, where water cascades in a smooth sheet from one to the next. This element introduces motion and a soft auditory layer, enriching the sensory experience of the garden.

Seating areas are thoughtfully integrated throughout, with steel and concrete benches that merge industrial precision with organic curvature. These elements, along with curated plantings, strike a balance between structure and softness, creating spaces that feel both modern and deeply connected to nature.

Together, these components form a cohesive environment that invites moments of pause, fosters connection, and supports emotional well-being—an enduring gift to those who spend time within the walls of the hospital.

This garden was in collaboration with our dear friend Pavla Clouser, who masterfully planted the garden and ensured its splendor.
